Today we had a difficult resolution to consider. The Diocese of Central Ecuador went through a contentious and controversial election process for a Bishop Co-Adjutor. In the end it was abundantly clear that, from a canonical perspective, an appropriate and legitimate election process occurred. Nevertheless matters among human beings are not necessarily so neat and clean and a number of people in the Diocese of Central Ecuador feel that their concerns were not adequately addressed. While deputies spoke passionately for and against one could feel the tidal emotional forces at work. The House of Deputies showed deep pastoral concern for the well being of the Diocese of Central Ecuador and a deep concern for the democratic process which is a central value of the Episcopal Church’s polity. In the end the voice vote sounded close enough to require an electronic vote and the election of the bishop-elect of Central Ecuador was confirmed by a 72% margin.
